WORK VISA

There are many different options to come to Canada as a worker and there are 2 different types of work permit – Open Work Permit or Employer Specific Work Permit. It is vital to understand your goals so Northpole immigration
can align the right program for you. We can match your skills and work experience to Canadian employers accordingly. The key is to determine the which skills have high demand in Canada to be able to navigate the right
options for you. Once you blend into the Canadian workforce, all you need is to gain Canadian work experience as most stream leads to Permanent Residence and the opportunity to bring your whole family.

Work Permit with LMIA

You may be eligible to apply for a work permit if your skills is in high-demand and there is a scarcity of workers in your field in Canada. Your application must be supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) – an authorization from Employment and Social Development Canada where an employer needs to hire a foreign worker. Northpole Immigration will be able to help you match your skills with a Canadian employer and apply a LMIA for you. Some LMIA may lead to Permanent Residence application.

What is LMIA?

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker.

A positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job. It will also show that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available to do the job. A positive LMIA is sometimes called a confirmation letter.

If the employer needs an LMIA, they must apply for one.

Once an employer gets the LMIA, the worker can apply for a work permit.

To apply for a work permit, a worker needs:
  • a job offer letter,
  • a contract,
  • a copy of the LMIA, and
  • the LMIA number.
An employer-specific work permit lets you work in Canada according to the conditions on your work permit, such as:
  • the name of the specific employer you can work for
  • how long you can work
  • the location where you can work (if applicable)

Before you submit your application for an employer-specific work permit, the employer who wants to hire you must complete certain steps and give you either a copy of a Labour Market Impact Assessment or an offer of employment number to include in your application.

Work Permit with LMIA Exempt

You may be eligible to apply for a work permit based on an exemption from the LMIA process. For LMIA-exempt, employer-specific work permit applications, the employer is required under section 209.11 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) to use the Employer Portal to submit the offer of employment directly to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and pay the compliance fee before the foreign national makes an application for a work permit. Northpole Immigration can help identify if your employer is LMIA Exempt and can apply work permit for you.

I came to Canada as an international student from Vietnam. I became a Permanent Resident in 2020 under the Express Entry via Provincial Nominee program. My application process was difficult but my lawyer Binny Joseph helped go through the difficult process so I can transition seamlessly to permanent residence. I will always be grateful to Binny as he was very professional and gives an extra mile by making himself available to take my calls even outside office hours. I am recommending him to all my friends who are interested to come to Canada.
